why kaleidoscope?
I’ve always been infatuated with kaleidoscopes. You never see the same image twice! For such a thing to take tens of hundreds of fractal, chaotic, and random objects and make this collaborative image that is entirely unique and beautiful, it is fascinating.
It brings upon self-awareness.
See, I make a mess of things quite often. My everyday happenings are this scattered array of disheveled and colorful gems. Some are more blemished and rough around the edges. Others gleam with brilliance and spunk. If I stopped long enough to look at all the pieces, I would ever so critically make a big deal about all the ugly fragments and how having them in the mix of all these beautiful moments sensibly just don’t mix. I would spend exhaustive amounts of time trying to excuse them away and pick them out one-by-one. That is my perspective.
You see, a kaleidoscope has an eyehole (God’s perspective) atop a tube (faith) that contains mirrors (God’s Grace) and an assortment of small, colorfully patterned objects. Symbolically, my choices, actions, thoughts — the ‘whole’ of me — make up this odd collection of objects or moments. Once twisted and turned, those little mirrors remarkably create a NEW image reflecting all my disasters, missteps, triumphs and successes into this breath-taking image unique to my journey. And here’s where it gets better: the picture of all these meshed moments are made radiant through the light of Jesus that I have in me!
Have you ever viewed a kaleidoscope through bright light and seen the intense hues and warmth from all the particles? It’s spectacular!
The love God has for me and the price that Christ paid for me allows the perspective to change. What I’ve made lusterless, Jesus makes glorified. What I’ve deemed worthless, Jesus makes priceless. What I consider irreparable, Jesus redeems! The beholding eye now sees the beauty of the sum of the pieces.
I’m reminded when things happen that I can’t make sense of, or when I make mistakes that I wished I hadn’t, it’s all part of this unique and beautiful image that is seen in God’s perspective. He creates a masterpiece out of the mess.

WOW! I really loved this! I too have ALWAYS loved kaleidoscopes since I was just a child. After reading you thoughts about them and your example of God’s love I LOVE them even more. I have never thought of them in this way and yet it makes so much sense! Thanks for the inspiring words this morning and for the new persepective I now have on something that I’ve always loved!!!
